Honestly, at this point I’ve pretty much said everything that I wanted to say here.

I consider this exercise in public journaling to have been a great success, and I’d like to thank all of you for participating. If it weren’t for you, I wouldn’t have made it this far. You’re the real heroes.

(Special thanks to my editor, Faye.)

27 January 2008 - 12:27Books 2007

Here’s everything that I read in 2007, with the following stats:

Total books: 35

Ratio of non-fiction/fiction: 0.167 (I’d like this to be higher.)

Ratio of books that I didn’t like to books that I’d recommend: 0.375 (This actually seems pretty healthy.)

Ratio of books whose titles begin with vowels to other books: 0.114

26 January 2008 - 14:13Inaugural Post

Okay, it’s time to start this off.

Why am I starting a web-log? Here’s what I’m thinking:

  • I feel that I’ve become less introspective over the last few years. I like the idea of journaling as a way of collecting my thoughts, and having the journal be public as a way to keep me actually writing in it.
  • If I actually follow through with this, and find as I regularly collect my thoughts that those thoughts are boring, then I’ve learned something valuable and can start paying more attention to things that are interesting to me.
  • If, on the other hand, my collection of thoughts is fascinating, then I can become a celebrated essayist. With the extra funds that I collect from my lecture circuit and associated merchandise, I will buy a beach house where my wife and I will have large family gatherings and which will, centuries from now, be declared an historic landmark. Religions will be formed. Far-future pilgrims will come away with visions that inspire them to do good in the world. Peace and joy will reign, eternally. …I have some further plans, but let me work on achieving this much before describing the more fanciful stuff.

I’m considering making a promise that I’ll post at least something here every day, but let me try doing it for a few days before committing.
